Beijing-Shanghai high-speed rail moves into profit

The Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Railway has become profitable after three years of operation, as it raked in 30 billion yuan (US$5 billion) from ticket sales and its passenger flow increased by 27 percent to 100 million people in 2014, according to the operators.
The idea of building the Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Railway was brought up in 1990, and the project was completed in 2011. The construction has cost about 208.8 billion yuan, and was estimated to break even after five years of operation, however it has exceeded the target after only three years.
“Passenger flow of the railway has reached 100 million in 2014; over 250 trains are running on the tracks every day, and even this cannot meet the need of passengers,” said chairman Cai Qinghua. “We are about to build the second Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Railway if it continues developing this way.”
According to the statistics from China Railway Corporation, the total railway passenger flow in 2014 was 800 million people, and the Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Railway accounted for one eighth of the whole. The railway links up 24 cities.
