The son of an Australian couple who died when Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 crashed over Ukraine last week said on Friday that justice will only be served when fighting in the region stops.

Paul Guard, whose parents Roger and Jill Guard were on the doomed flight, told local radio that the Ukraine conflict was to blame for his loved-ones' deaths and justice for the victims would be served when both sides involved in the conflict lay down their weapons.

"I believe that the party responsible for the death of my parents, all those children on the plane, all of those people in the prime of their lives, is not just Vladimir Putin, it's not just the Russian military, it's not the Ukrainian government or the separatist rebels or even the person who pressed the button on the missile launcher -- I believe it's the conflict itself," Guard said.

"If the conflict wasn't happening there, that plane would not have been shot down," he said.

"As long as that conflict goes on, as long as people are dying every day, there will be no justice for my parents and I say to world leaders, I say to the Australian Government, if you want justice for the victims and the victims' families, please find a way to stop that conflict."

"Come to the table, talk about a peaceful solution. There has to be a political solution to this problem."

MH17, a Boeing 777 en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, crashed near the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk on July 17, killing all 298 people on board.
