A new water and ink painting exhibition titled "Beacon Light" is being held in Beijing to shed new light on the distinguished Shaanxi rural area.

Created by veteran artist Dang Zhen and his 12 students, the water and ink paintings show landscapes of Shenyangya countryside in northern Shaanxi Province. The sceneries that they were exploring were those of the loess - a quintessential Chinese scenery.

"The scenery in Shaanxi reminds me of a graceful face of an old man whose wrinkles are a testimony of a long, productive and meaningful life. The pleasant grey of winter bursts into countless flowering trees in spring," art critic Dr. Rasko Radovic said.

The exploration is creative and offers very different interpretations of the same countryside which testifies to a great versatility inherent, he added. "In this traditional technique the painters are innovative masters of it. On one side there is a pagoda in them; on the other, lustrous dark, formidable rocks; on yet another, the same rocks shimmering in iridescent colors. Through the interpretation of a westerner, who may often find this kind of landscape a bit repetitive, they can appreciate its variety and beauty."

Not all of the artists paint Chinese mountain and river scenes. Some have skillfully adapted the traditional Chinese water and ink painting techniques to more western motifs and scenes, which proved the versatility, adaptability and potential for development of the contemporary water and ink.

"The exhibition's theme is Chinese ink paintings and the exploration of contemporary Chinese ink paintings which has a 20 to 30 year history. The creation of each generation of artists would be influenced by the outside world," artist Dang Zhen said, "At present, there are many things that might affect an artist’s life. I wish the exhibition could show the young generation of artists' interpretation and creation, and let more people know their works."

Born in Shandong Province in 1973, Dang often portrays the beauty of nature in his water and ink works, in which nature looks like an aesthetic and poetic dream.

The exhibition will be shown at 751 Fashion Echo art gallery in Beijing until May 15, 2017.
